installing lxfree
It sounds as though you downloaded the correct version. The Intel 10.5+ version will not run on 10.4.
Did you already have LXFree installed and this is an upgrade?
There is a problem with versions of the OS X installer where it won't install because it thinks that the software is already installed. If you already had a version installed, this could be the problem.
If you did not have LXFree installed, try downloading the package again. It may have been damaged some how.

What browser are you using to download LXFree?
Does the browser launch the installer for you?
-----
The actual file you download is an archive called "lxfree.zip"
Safari (at least some versions) automatically expands this file to "lxfree.pkg" and then launches the installer.
Firefox generally behaves differently. It may ask to save the file or to open with... You don't want to open lxfree.zip with the installer--if that is even possible. You want to save "lxfree.zip" and then expand it to "lxfree.pkg" You should then be able to open "lxfree.pkg" with the installer.
-----
If you choose "Get Info" for the lxfree.pkg file, the current 10.4 package for LXFree v1.8.7 should say that it was created: Friday, January 21, 2011 11:27 AM and is 2.5 MB on disk. Checking this can give you an idea if the package was downloaded and expanded correctly.
