Setting Lantern Height

No doubt this is some where in the search, But I have no idea where to start thinking of the word!

What sets the Heigh of the Lanterns (fixture) when plotting them out. From the side view I can see my fixture is at 14m along the vertical ruler. But where in the inspector has it been told to be at that height.

I have found the 'z offset' input in the 3D section of the info - this does move the fixture up or down on the side view and obviously affects the size of the beam. But this is a confusing way of setting the height.

Lights take their height from the position that they are attached to. You can set this by selecting the position and editing the height in the Inspector's Info tab.

The x/y/z offsets are plus and minus the height inherited from the position. These are used to account for mounting options: underhung, overhung, sidearm, differing yoke size, etc.

is there then a default height of which the fixture will sit at if not attached to a position?

Yes, it is 20 feet for english measurements and 7m for metric measurements.

For LXBeams 4.0, there will be an ability to set the default height for both newly added positions and for lights not associated with a position.

But, perhaps clarifying how lights are associated with positions would be helpful.

Lights that intersect a position are associated with that position and they take on the height of that position. Unless, that position is mapped into a different location than it is drawn in plan view (Map Endpoints). When a position is mapped, a light intersecting that position is also mapped keeping the same proportion between the 3D endpoints and the light's location as the proportion of the 2D endpoints and where the light is drawn in 2D.

If a symbol does not intersect a position line, the light can still be associated with a position by name. In this case, the light's 3D location is the same as it is drawn in plan view at the height of the position that matches its name.

So, you can set the 3D height of lights that are not drawn intersecting a position line by associating them with a position by name and setting the height of that position.

The most complicated case is if a light is associated by name with a position that is also has its endpoints mapped. In this case, the light's 3D position is determined by the difference between the mapped endpoints and the offset between the 2D start of the position and the 3D mapped start of the position. This case is probably an exception and will never be used so don't worry if it doesn't make sense.

In all cases, lights can only be associated with positions on the same layer (or a layer that is set to be selectable when it is not current)
