With LXBeams for macOS or LXFree, just drag the image file to the window and drop it. Using drag and drop centers the image on the point where you dropped the file. With the macOS applications, you can also use File->Import->Graphic. This will import the file centering it in the plot. If an image in the plot is selected when File->Import->Graphic is used, the contents of that image will be replaced. The incoming graphic will be fit into the frame of the image that was replaced.

With LXFree for Java, you use Format->Insert->Graphic from File. It behaves similar to the way the menu command works in the mac applications. Instead of being centered, the image starts out in the upper left corner. The result is the same if an image is selected when a graphic is inserted. In this case, the contents of the selected image's frame are replaced with the contents of the file being inserted.
