MSC to trigger EFX

Hi everyone,

Thanks to all for your support of LX Console and especially the admin of course. I have downloaded the latest build of LX Console and have been experimenting with the new Effects window. Very nice.

I use QLab to trigger LX Console. I spent a few hours trying to trigger an effect I build in LX Console from QLab with no luck. Does anyone have any tips? Also, I would like to have the effect loop and then have QLab send another MSC message to stop the loop.

Perhaps I should experiment with MIDI note messages?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There are two ways to accomplish this.

Effects can be triggered by MIDI. So, instead of sending MIDI Show Control from QLab, you could send a MIDI note on which could start the effect and another note on to stop the effect. In LXConsole, you use the setup window's MIDI tab to configure the notes and the corresponding actions.

The other way is to use MIDI Show Control and to add the effect start and effect stop actions to a pair of cues. Then, trigger those cues with MSC to start and stop the effect. Actions are attached to cues using the advanced tab of the main window's drawer.

The latest version, 3.0.9, re-works the drawer to make adding actions to cues much easier. Now, it is quite similar to setting up MIDI or OSC actions in in the Setup window.

In addition, the latest build (6416) allows effects to be started and stopped using the "Chasers" command format. Just like running cues with MSC, MIDI/MSC in must be enabled in the File=>External menu and the Live window must be open to receive the MSC messages. In order for effects messages to be compatible with the MSC specification, effect names are limited to numbers. (You have to name the effect "1.0" instead of "Effect 1" or "My Chase".) As a sid note, although a STOP message will cause LXConsole stop the currently running effect regardless of what it is, it appears that QLab requires you to specify a cue number for sending the message.

Thank you so much. That is so helpful. I'll give the MSC a try.
