why can't I find the toolbar?

I tried installing both direct over the net and via downloading to my pc. Same thing. The toolbar does not appear.I run Java 1.6, so there should be no problem.
Some sign of a toolbar tries to appear when I open the application, then dissapears when I move the mouse even a bit.
Any ideas?

Best!

This is quite unusual. It appears that you are using Windows. What version of Windows? LXFree for Java on Windows requires that you uninstall a previous version before installing an update. That probably has nothing to do with this problem. However, it may affect which version of LXFree for Java that you think you are running. You can check the version of LXFree for Java using the Help->About LXFree for Java command. The latest version is 1.0.20.

With Java an exception will not crash the application. But, it may cause something--like displaying the toolbar--not to happen. If you open the main help window, Help->Help... you will see a link at the bottom called "Console Log". If you click on that link, the help window will display any error messages. If the cause of the toolbar not being displayed is an exception, there will be a traceback of where this happened. You can copy and paste the contents of the log to an e-mail or a post in the forum and that will provide some clue as to what is happening.

no such exception appears.
console log reads:
LXFree for Java 1.0.20 (4905)
JRE: 1.6.0-rc
Fri Jan 11 04:18:10 EET 2013

It is the first time I installed lxfree
I did uninstall it and re-install it two times though.
BTW the numeric shortcuts seem to work, but I would have to get to help all the time.
I am running windows vista, java 1.6, the system appears ok....
so?

The fact that there are no exceptions is good and bad. If there was an exception, it would point to the problem. As it is, it appears that the toolbar is not being laid out properly. This could have to do with either the version of Java that you have installed, or the look and feel of the user interface (UI) that is specific to Windows Vista.

There is an update posted that adds a new "Reset Toolbar" command to the View menu. This command logs the current layout of the toolbar and replaces it with a different one. You can uninstall the previous version and give this one a try to see if using the Reset Toolbar will cause it to become visible for you.

The other thing that is worth trying is to update your version of Java. You can do this through the Control Panel / Java. According to the log you posted, you have version 1.6.0-rc and the current version is 1.7.0_10. This may or may not resolve the issue. It is much more likely that it has to do with the Vista UI and that may or may not get any attention in updates.

Hopefully, the Reset Toolbar command will work and we will know what the issue was.

I uninstalled both lxfree and java.
I installed jave 7 and then I downloaded again lxfree.
I saved it to disk. I noticed it was a few bits larger that the previous one.
I installed it et voila, it works! No need to reset the toolbar at all.
thanks
