change in paste function?
Beams 1.0.6. Trying to paste a pdf graphic into a new layer (which has worked without problems on previous versions) and I get an empty message window. And I am not able to paste the graphic into the drawing. Has something changed?

This is not a change unless it is in the way the system handles the clipboard. But, it is a glitch.
It appears that you probably have both text and an image(s) on the clipboard. The message window appears because LXBeams is trying to interpret the text as XML.
You can try drag and drop instead of copy and paste.
This should be fixed with LXBeams 1.0.9 (latest build link) and LXFree 1.5.9.
