Moving Light Symbols

Post by hamish »

Any chance of getting generic (or even better - manufacturer specific) symbols for moving lights?
What is required to created symbols? Is it something that could be done within the community that is currently using LX?

Hi,

There are two parts to getting moving light symbols. First, they must be created and stored where LXFree can read them. Second, the symbols must be used in a key. We are working on editors for both these types of files and hope to have beta versions available soon.

LXFree actually has a few moving light symbols built in. They are not included in any key because the rest of the support for moving as opposed to conventional lights is still unfinished although a lot of ground work has been completed.

You can use the existing symbols by opening a "Symbols" report. Add a "Symbol ID" column. This will give you the ability to change the symbol associated with any entry in the key. The symbol ID's 700, 701, 702, 704, 705, 710, 711 are the current moving light symbols. (The KeyEditor will allow you to select Symbol IDs using a graphical interface.)

Creating symbols files without a graphical editor is more complex. Symbol files are relatively simple XML based collections of points that form the path that describes the outline of the symbol. Each point has an X and Y coordinate and a code representing either move to the point, line to the point, curve to the point or reverse curve to the point. It is possible to edit these with a text editor. But it would be cumbersome.

The LXTools collection of editors for LXFree's support databases should be available in Beta form soon. There may not be much documentation for them at least at first. But, they should be usable.

The first beta of LXTools is available for download.

http://www.macluxpro.com/lx/lxtools_download.html

LXTools includes LXSymbolEditor, LXKeyEditor, LXReportEditor and LXColorLibraryEditor.

You can use the symbol editor to create symbols and the key editor to include them in keys.
